Tokyo Ghoul has an incredible story to tell that is engaging and dynamic. It is a gritty tragedy that pulls you into a dark world that's so twisted that you end up rooting for the monsters. I love Tokyo Ghoul, but holy god damn does the storytelling SUCK! No other series has made me have to read it with the wiki open in another tab just so that I can try and make sense of what's going on. Most of the problem stems from the characters imo.
The author has done such a good job at creating strong main characters, but most other characters, even supporting characters are SOOOOOO forgettable that it's not even funny. Especially the ghoul investigators and more recently these Q's in Tokyo Ghoul:RE. They're such weak characters that I can't remember their names almost 30 chapters in! It's such a bad dynamic when characters that are supposed to have significance just don't. When I was reading the final chapters of Tokyo Ghoul and ALL of:RE, I'm like 'wtf is happening?' , 'who is this person', to the wiki we go!, 'what?
And don't even get me started on speech flow, when half the time it's hard to even tell who's speaking. Minecraft Star Wars Venator Map Of California. Does anyone else feel this way about Tokyo Ghoul?
Any thoughts or opinions? Do you think I'm stupid? Edit: I like your opinions, I really do. It's cool to see people's viewpoints on the characters and story. It's fun having these debates about manga despite the passive aggressive comments (from both sides:3). I, and a few, others see TG differently than the majority of you. I see a lot wrong with it, I see weakness in the characters and inconsistent storytelling, others see emotional brilliance with epic characters.
If everyone agreed with me then this would be a very boring discussion thread! Tokyo ghoul is a manga that is written in a subtle way. It doesn't aim to help people to remember specifics, it aims to mind-fuck people when it shows how normal gestures/conversation/character/events have larger implication in understanding the story.
I personally am impressed with the style as it made me read everything super extra carefully and it creates a sense of insecurity from my wild imagination of what's going to happen. Top class banter from Ishida. No, you're not stupid. Just try to get used to it. I don't understand which character is weak in tokyo ghoul Touka, Arima, The Mados, Amon, Takizawa, Tsukiyama, Yoshimura, Rize, Hinami, Nishiki, Uta, Hide, Juzo, Jason, Eto. Are all very strong characters.
The new squad unit still have more time to improve. So far Urie and Toru are quite the strong character. Shirazu is still just a joker and Saiko is starting to get attention. So yeah, I don't get what you mean by 'weak' characters.
All characters have been making impact for me. If you don't like the cryptic and mysterious nature of the manga, it's just not your manga to read then. It doesn't make it horrible story telling, as a lot of audience enjoy that style. I personally prefer that kind of story telling after reading so many more straight forward story telling. Also, I think I've read too much manga to the point where I can guess which mangaka is on track and which will make stupid plot out of nowhere. Right now, imho, Ishida is quite on track. I think he already knows how this story ends and how to get there.
Just need the little details, and so far he's working wonders. Touka has contributed nothing to the story, she's failed as a mentor, an anti-hero, and even a love interest. The gourmet wants to eat Kaneki, he even failed at being the betrayer and his only purpose was his connection to the underground.
I'll give you Juuzou, he's fantastic. Arima is for whatever reason some superhuman ghoul killing machine, no context, no questions asked, he just is. Amon was almost there, he at least filled the part of tragic hero who's downfall was his own sense of justice, at least until he comes back. Urie (the former Q leader???) is so shallow of a character it's painful. Touka, I think, has contributed a lot to the story. I think Touka is the one providing the most personal insight to the live of a ghoul in the story.
She's definitely one of the main pilar in tokyo ghoul. Arima, I think, is the kind of guy that will be removed for the sake of destroying the balance of the story. A lot of story uses one:. I actually like the fact that not all characters are explored in details. I think some authors (Naruto and Bleach) are trying too hard exploring characters just to ditch them at the end.
Tokyo Ghoul, so far, hit the balance well. What makes you affirm all those failures? Touka and Kaneki have an incredibly developed relation and she alone is a great showing of the fruits of the internal clonflict between humanity and ghoul. Amon was there, and his relationship with the CCG members was also a great way of making us, while at the same time cheering for Kaneki, see that even the CCG aren't 'bad guys', they are just human. I feel you are looking at these charactes as If they had goals to accomplish in the series which they never did.
For example, Touka wasn't meant to be a 'mentor', because Kaneki had little to learn, what was comingfor him was way too big for any lesson to be of use, and the manga showed us. The changes he would go through weren't voluntary, neither we're his new ways of survival. Actually, pretty much everything that happens in TG is an overwhelming action that hits Kaneki. Now about Urie.
How in the world is he a shallow character? In less than 30 chapters we've just seen a character that was amazingly hated by everyone have a mental breakdown so well made and such great human aspect that people we're fucking sympathizing with him on the comments section of the chapter. His character was built up until now, with all his baseless arrogance, his fascination for power, his hunger. And now he fell, he's down a line of lack of sanity that we can compare to early characters of Tokyo Ghoul such as even Kaneki. He isn't shallow, he's in construction to be an amazing character. Let's see if I manage to not sound like a dick. First of all, it happens to me, same or more often than it might happen to you.
But to me this is because the story is complex, not bad storytelling. And I enjoy complex, when done well, because the times I DO get aomething right, it makes me feel good. And if I miss something, I will come here to share, or wait for it to be explained. Because a whole fucking lot ends up being explained. Just not at the very beggining. For me this manga has quality for many reasons, one of them being that it doesn't hold your hand and walk you through everything. Like one piece or naruto did, like so many mangas that, while you can enjoy, you can't say: I don't understand what's going on!!
Because everything is being spoonfed to you, in little bits so you don't choke. Could the storytelling be better?
This isn't novel-worthy. But fuck me sideways if I have any idea how to make it better, or if I could improve anything, at all. Tldr I fucking enjoy it like a small kid • • • •. Tokyo ghoul is a story you really need to really look into.
Ishida loves to troll and has a thing for foreshadowing. I've reread the story many times, and I still realized I miss some hidden elements from my first time reading. Such examples would be foreshadowing a tragic future later on in the story, from which I won't disclose. Well anyways, this story isn't something for first time readers to read, for the story is so in depth; it won't be for somebody who wants to just read it in one sitting and enjoy it. It will get confusing, which is the story's main purpose. But at the same time, this story is defiantly a different and interesting one. Like you said, the characters are very strong personality wise, and we also see both good and bad changes it has on their mental health.
My favorite part has to be the growth of the MC, Kaneki, for a lot of his suffering makes him grow in ways that may seem awesome at first, but once you keep on reading you realize how tragic he has become. Well anyways, take a break from it and come back when you're ready to give it a complete chance.
I was really intruiged at first because I thought the concept would make for interesting world building and some nice psychological drama. In the end it's really nothing more than generic Shounen drivel with some mature themes that are laughably clunky in execution. Motogp 06 Game.
The characters are lame and forgettable, especially the investigators. The main character is kinda interesting at first when he has to deal with his new life but rather than his psyche, the focus lies on stupid battles with the most generic power imaginable. It's just blades, tentacles and projectiles. Anyways, the mc pulls a complete 180 halfway through and turns into generic, mysterious and cool Shounen character#381 complete with classy atire, eyepatch and white hair. And of course there's Suzuya. Probably he worst character ever brought to paper.
Oh well, it's probably not as bad as I think it is. I was just really annoyed whenever it tried to be smart and bored when it tried to be emotionaly investing.
Not to mention disapointed after realising it would never live up to my expectations. But everytime someone mentions that they didn't like tg for whatever reason, hordes of fans will swarm you, telling you over and over again just how smart and mature the series is while 14 year olds are talking selfies wearing that ridiculous, gimp like Kaneki mask. I see a lot of people complain that they are lost but tbh I don't really see how. If you can't remember who a character is, chances are you don't really need to. A lot of the ghoul investigators aren't significant characters, I don't think Ishida is trying to make them significant but rather is trying to make them more than just faceless grunts.
The guy that is fighting Uta or the guy whose squad was wiped out by Nutcracker isn't meant to be as significant as Amon, Juuzou, Akira, Arima, etc. As for the Quinxes, yeah they're pretty clearly meant to be significant, but idk what to say to you about them. I think they're pretty memorable characters, but none of them have really had time to be explored as it's only been 30 chapters and Ishida is also working on setting things up and reestablishing things. As for speech flow, I imagine it'd be easier to follow in Japanese.
I seem to not understand your issue. I wouldn't say you're stupid but I would question your reading comprehension. I don't insult strangers for no reason on the Internet haha. I find the story extremely easy to follow. I think you fail to understand that most characters are meant to be forgettable. But some of the things you're complaining about seem.
Like how you could read 29 chapters and not know the names of the Qs squad members points to a comprehension problem, not a storytelling problem. They are all very memorable in their own way due to their generally extreme nature's.
Once again, I'm not calling you stupid. But I do find it weird that you have trouble following What's happening. Especially considering the narrative follows a mostly tried and true format that's been used in countless other mediums of storytelling. It appearts to me you can't comprehend complex story telling. Sui in:RE, takes the CCG side of the story in depth, and there ARE MORE CCG OFFICERS AT WAR THAN THERE ARE GHOULS.
You don't have to remember all of the names, more than%60 of the characters introduces are just side/supporting and/or filler characters for the spesific arcs. The story has more depth, it even names the filler characters etc, which adds more value to the present arc. Tho i have to agree adding too many characters can lead up to the 'LIM-Dal Young Syndrome'(this is what i call it), Ishida manages to make it work.
